My Story

After my wife, Tricia, and I started dating I pretty much stopped all physical activity that was such a huge part of my life.  I was happy, content and let myself go. I ballooned up to 240 lbs. from the time we started dating till sometime after we got married.  At that weight I was downright miserable.  I had issues with acid reflux that was so bad I would wake up at night gagging. Tricia also complained that I snored extremely loud.  I had pain in my knees while climbing steps at work.  I hated buying clothes because I was frustrated about the sizes I was buying. Nothing seemed to fit me right.  I didn’t want to go out because I was not happy with myself.  I could have not been a very good husband.  I was miserable.

Tricia had signed up as a Beachbody Coach for the discount and later decided she wanted to help others get in shape.  I know it must have really bothered her to see me this way and I am very thankful for her patience. She was not pushy or gave me any grieve. She continued to love me just the same.  Tricia worked hard on her own fitness and I sat by idle, feeling like hell.

I am not sure exactly pushed me over the edge but I know of few things that might have helped.  I had a couple of close friends give me a hard time about my weight.  That was something I was not used to and to be honest I didn’t like at all.  Although it hurt at the time, I now realize it was what I needed.  I saw a few pictures of me from a vacation trip that I was disgusted with.  Who was that fat guy standing next to my wife? Our first son was born and I wanted to be around for him.  I was finally ready for a change.

Tricia had politely asked me several times to workout with her and I declined. I then took her up on it and together we started P90X.  When you start P90X it suggest you take your before pictures so you can compare later to see your progress. Oh my god! I saw for the first time how big I was. Seeing yourself like that without your shirt is painful.  That really sealed the deal for me.  I was going to give this an all out effort.  Along with the workouts I supplemented my diet with Shakeology as a meal replacement.   I changed my diet and one by one removed all my bad eating habits.  One of which was Diet Coke.

After my first cycle of P90X I lost 28lbs.  I have enjoyed working out with Tony and hung in there.  I still do P90X as a base fitness program to this day.  Over all I have lost 50 lbs and feel wonderful. Thanks to my wife, Beachbody fitness programs and Shakeology I am a new man.  I have so much more energy and love getting out.  I have the energy to hang out with my two boys.   All the issues I was having with snoring, acid reflux and joint pain are gone.  I love buying new clothes. I am in sizes I have not worn in a very long time.  I am leaner now than before Tricia and I met. Life is good!

  1. Great Post Blake!! I know exactly how you felt. When my wife got pregnant I balloned up to 260lbs. I started with Turbo Jams only because that what we had at the time. Soon after we got P90X and I lost 23lbs in the first round. Good for you for keeping with P90X. Awesome story. Great Website too.

  2. Loved your story as I can relate also. Before I started to date my fiance I finished up with P90X and after that I kinda let myself go a bit and gained weight and lose muscle. My wedding date is pushing me forward now with having an end goal date to where I want to be in my life.

  3. Love you story.. Its usually the wife who has the weight gain. I love that you started because of her… Good inspiration..and I love that you are on this journey together!

  4. Great job Blake! I know how you felt as I too was “ribbed” by friends and even though we laugh it off deep down it hurts. But as you say it was what we need for a wake up call. We just need to keep pushing hard so many others wake up also. Now let’s see some before/after pictures!

  5. Great post!!’ and I can sooo relate! Why ^do we give up on our looks when we fall in love??!!! Good thing we turned it all around!’ congrats to you!!

  8. Blake, you have done a wonderful job encouraging people. Congratulations on the weight loss too. I too know how it feels to be disgusted with what you see in pictures. It is incredibly disheartening. I wish I were closer to you guys so that I could participate more in the Gainesville group.
Best of luck and wishes for continued success in all that you do.

    • Thank you Jennifer!

  12. Wow, Awesome results. Congrats on your success!

  13. Awesome story, Blake! You’re truly inspiring! Funny how so many of us actually have pretty much the exact same story about seeing some picture and being disgusted with ourselves, but so many are just afraid to own up and admit it and make that decision to commit to better health. You’re a leader, man!

  14. Great story Blake! Isn’t it great when you take control of your health. Nice job!

  15. It’s always great to have a spouse as an accountability buddy. They are right there every day to offer support. I have been my hubby’s moral support for years, but it has helped me stay in shape and lose weight over the years just as much as it has helped him.

  16. Great story! I can totally relate to your struggle. I got up to 238lbs with the pains in my knees and back and everywhere! Good job on turning your life around and now helping others to do the same.

  17. I just love to read how different people came to their decision to make a lifestyle change. Yours is an inspiring story – I bet your wife was very happy to see you come around :)
